Manhattan Beach Kitchen Remodel

This Manhattan Beach Kitchen Remodel took only some refinishing to bring it to modern times.  When a complete renovation is not necessary because the owners like the cabinets or the cabinets are new, refinishing is a great option to modernized the look of any kitchen.

Refinishing Cabinets

But what is refinishing exactly?

Refinishing in woodworking and the decorative arts, refinishing refers to the act of repairing or reapplying the wood finishing on an object. In practice, this may apply to the paint or wood finish top coat, lacquer or varnish. The artisan or restorer is traditionally aiming for an improved or restored and renewed finish.

In this particular case, the owners did not want to get new cabinets because they were new; they just wanted to upgrade the color of them to have the kitchen look sleek and modern.

Since they wanted to have the island as the focus of the kitchen they chose to have it refinished with a blue paint and the surround cabinets with a white lacquer.

This look gives this kitchen a modern look, it creates a sleek aesthetic which gives the eyes a pleasant sight to see.

Lacquer or Stain

Another aspect of a refinishing is choosing between lacquer or stain.  Here is the difference between these two elements:

Lacquer:  The term lacquer is used for a number of hard and potentially shiny finishes applied to materials such as wood or metal. In modern techniques, lacquer means a range of clear or coloured wood finishes that dry by solvent evaporation or a curing process that produces a hard, durable finish.

Stain: A stain is a discoloration that can be clearly distinguished from the surface, material, or medium it is found upon. They are caused by the chemical or physical interaction of two dissimilar materials. Staining is used for biochemical research, metal staining, and art.
